From the recording U Know What Time It Is

My journey as an artist continues with this 2nd single from the upcoming “After All These Years” EP.

For this track, I decided to pay homage to one of my biggest musical influences – The Time. The inspiration I got from the Minneapolis funk of the early 80’s is one of the biggest reasons I am a musician to this day. If you know Minneapolis funk, then you probably can hear bits of it weaved into almost every track I make.

This time around, just for the fun of it, I issued a little challenge to myself: take the drum beat from the classic tune “777-9311”, change it up a little bit, and write a completely different song to that beat. I had a ton of fun doing this. Drummer-style drum programming is one of my strengths and I definitely got to flex that on this track. I would love to see a good drummer play along to this one.

I also paid homage to the album cover from 1982’s “What Time Is It?” by putting my own little twist on the same theme. I was a 14 year-old 9th grader when that album dropped and it remains one of my all-time favorites. Consider “U Know What Time It Is” my response to that question.

I hope you enjoy this one!
